Faced with an outdated and irreparable boiler system in a local school, our team was tasked with designing and implementing a heating solution that accommodated tight spatial constraints and specific architectural limitations. The existing boiler was situated in a basement with a complex internal flue pathway, making it a challenging environment for standard replacements.

The Challenge

The main challenge was the location of the old Clyde Combustion boiler in a confined basement area and the inadequacy of the existing flue system for modern, efficient condensing boilers. The existing gas supply was also undersized and needed upgrading to meet current standards and requirements.

The Solution

After careful consideration, we chose the Keston Heat 2 55 boilers due to their high efficiency and flexible flue options, which allow for up to 18 meters of twin flue installation using 50mm muPVC solvent weld pipes. This capability was crucial in overcoming the spatial restrictions imposed by the existing building layout.

**Key elements of the solution included:**

– **Installation of Two Keston Boilers**: To ensure adequate heating capacity, two units were installed, matching the 100kW output previously provided by the single Clyde boiler.

– **System Upgrades**: A new pressurisation set and expansion vessel were installed, enabling the removal of the old feed and expansion tank along with the open vent and cold feed pipes, significantly streamlining the system.

– **New Gas Supply Route**: The gas supply was rerouted externally around the building to avoid the limitations of the previous setup and ensure a more robust and compliant gas feed.

– **Custom Flue Installation**: Each boiler was equipped with a new muPVC twin flue system, custom-fitted to the building’s specific needs.

The Outcome

The project was completed with minimal disruption to the school’s daily operations. The new system was thoroughly tested and commissioned, promptly restoring efficient heating to the building. This upgrade not only ensured compliance with current environmental standards but also enhanced the system’s efficiency and reduced ongoing maintenance costs.
