Honouring the Past, Building for the Future: Precision in Heritage Restoration

At SR Industrial, we are passionate about preserving the historical integrity of the buildings we work on, while using modern craftsmanship to ensure they stand the test of time. Our latest project is a perfect example of how attention to detail, skill, and respect for history come together to create exceptional results.

While conducting routine assessments of the sash windows on this beautiful building, we discovered an unexpected issue: two cantilever brackets that appeared to hold up the roof. Upon further inspection, it became clear that these brackets were purely decorative, as the roof was actually supported by hidden steelwork. However, one of the cantilever brackets had succumbed to extensive rotting over time, and while it wasn’t posing a structural risk, it had lost the strength to support itself.

With our team’s dedication to maintaining both the aesthetic and historical integrity of the building, we approached the restoration with care and precision. Here’s what we did:

  1. Detailed Inspection & Assessment: Once scaffolding was erected, we conducted an in-depth inspection of the cantilever brackets. One bracket was deemed sound and in good condition, but the other required replacement due to its advanced deterioration.
  2. Respecting the Original Design: The cantilever bracket is not just functional but is an essential decorative element that complements the overall design of the building. Replicating the intricate detail was challenging, but our skilled craftsmen rose to the occasion. We took special care to ensure that the new bracket matched the original in both form and finish, staying true to the building’s architectural character.
  3. Seamless Installation: With the new bracket meticulously crafted, we carefully removed the decayed one. Hauling the replacement up to its roof position, we maneuvered it into place with the utmost precision. The new bracket was then securely fixed to the existing structure, ensuring it was both aesthetically pleasing and durable for years to come.

This project is a reminder of the delicate balance we must strike in restoring heritage buildings. It’s not just about fixing what’s broken, but about preserving the beauty and craftsmanship of the past while ensuring the structure is fit for the future.

Key Takeaways:

  • Heritage buildings often hold hidden challenges, but with careful planning and craftsmanship, we can overcome them.
  • Maintaining architectural integrity is just as important as ensuring structural safety.
  • Every project is a blend of honouring the past while incorporating the expertise of today’s tradespeople.
